What is Windows S Mode and should I disable it?

As of my last update in January 2022, Windows 10 in S Mode is a version of Windows 10 meant to offer a more streamlined and secure experience, especially for users who mainly use Microsoft Store apps. In S Mode, you can solely install apps from the Microsoft Store, and the operating system generally strives to provide improved performance and security.

Here are some key points about Windows 10 in S Mode:

  • App Installation: You can only install apps from the Microsoft Store. This is intended to enhance security by ensuring that apps go through a vetting process before being made available.
  • Performance: S Mode is designed to provide better performance compared to regular Windows 10, as it restricts the installation of potentially resource-intensive third-party applications.
  • Security: By limiting app installations to the Microsoft Store, Windows 10 in S Mode aims to reduce the risk of malware and other security threats.
  • Switching Out of S Mode: Users have the option to switch out of S Mode for free. Once switched out, you can install apps from sources other than the Microsoft Store.

If you find that the restrictions of S Mode are too limiting for your needs, or if you have specific applications that are not available in the Microsoft Store, you might consider switching out of S Mode. However, keep in mind that doing so is generally a one-way process – once you switch out of S Mode, you cannot revert back.

To disable Windows 10 S Mode:

  • Open the Microsoft Store.
  • Search for "Switch out of S Mode."
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

It is essential to regularly check for the latest updates from Microsoft to ensure that you have access to all the latest features and changes.
